"The first step to addressing our behavioral health challenges is to increase access to care. Often with behavioral health and substance abuse a window of opportunity opens where a patient is ready to seek and receive treatment. If the appropriate resources are not available in a timely manner, the window of opportunity closes and patients continue to struggle and conditions fail to improve and often worsen. It is common for patients to be "stuck" in an emergency department or continue to be inadequately supported in the community while waiting for access to treatment. Our communities in Alaska have some of the highest rates of suicide, domestic violence, and substance use related health problems in the country. Increasing available in-patient and out-patient treatment opportunities is critical to our success in improving the Alaskan and the local mental health and substance abuse crisis."
